American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program

Horn Lake American Legion Hugh Dancy Post # 134 is looking for 9th-12th
grade students, including home schoolers, to participate in the 2013
American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program with an ultimate
award of $138,000 in scholarships.  The purpose of this "Constitutional
Speech Contest" is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the
United States Constitution.



Scholarship awards are presented to the three (3) finalists in the final
round of the national contest: 1st place $18,000, 2nd place $16,000 and 3rd
place $14,000.  Each state winner who is certified and participates in the
first round of the national contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $1,500
scholarship.  The Northern MS Area winner will also receive a scholarship
award.  Scholarship awards may be used to attend any college or university
in the United States.  The prepared oration must be on some aspect of the
United States Constitution with emphasis on a citizen's duties and
obligations to our government.  In addition, a brief discourse on an
assigned topic related to the basic principles of government is required.

581 1264) to register by December 18, 2012.  Speeches will be presented in
front of a five (5) member panel of business and civic leaders on Monday,
January 14, 2013 6:00 at the Horn Lake American Legion at 2520 Goodman Road
West.  Additional time may be required on Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
National finals will be held in April, 2013.
